Conflict Consortium Abstract

This paper explores ways to transform conversations from unmanageable gridlock to productive dialogue. The author discusses how transcendent forms of communication create a new space where parties explore both their similarities and differences and find a way to build understanding. Such communication allows individuals to experience the tension of difference, move beyond this tension to a place of constructive conversation, and create a context for shared meaning. The article presents several case studies to illustrate how dialogue accomplishes these goals.

Red State/ Blue State: US Political Polarization

Though US politics has long been divided along ideological lines, the last two presidential elections have created increased polarization between liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans. How did this happen? Is it good for the country? Can anything be done to reunited us?
