Publisher Abstract

This book considers how society can address divisive issues productively in an age of pluralism. After examining dominant postmodern as well as ancient understandings of rhetoric, the author suggests that many social issues are regarded as intractable as a result of "an incommensurability between the conceptions figuring in the competing positions taken." She explores the rhetorical methods of commonplaces, topics, and stasis theory as ways to redefine rhetoric and move conversations out of stalemate.
