Publisher Abstract
While deliberative democracy aims to provide a model for dialogue about deep political disagreements, this model actually serves to misrepresent the nature of the disagreement. The author offers a modified agonal approach that "allows the expression of reasons in the terms that provide a context for the position taken by each side of the debate." (p. 55) In agonal settings, the focus is not on reaching consensus about policy decisions, but instead on understanding the true nature of each other’s positions.
