Conflict Consortium Abstract

This paper explores some of the limitations of Western conflict resolution approaches and highlights Arab-Islamic rituals as an alternative approach to reconciliation. It describes how rituals such as sulh and musalaha are an integral part of reconciliation and conflict resolution in the Middle East and how these approaches emphasize the importance of relationships, religious ideals, and social harmony. In addition, it explores some ways in which the United States and other would-be mediators in the Middle East peace process might benefit from integrating these symbolic practices in their reconciliation processes.

"The concept and practice of violence prevention have evolved from being focused almost exclusively on the short-term interventions of preventive diplomacy, to a new, more comprehensive approach that can be defined as structural prevention and includes long-term initiatives targeting the root causes of conflict."
